Snow white Winter Sports World goes green.
Australia’s first indoor snow resort will be carbon zero from day one of opening.
We will sport the latest green technology to ensure we are a sustainable, self-sufficient – and cool – oasis despite our location in one of the hottest places on Earth (sometimes well over 40 degrees C).
Our director and visionary Peter Magnisalis is confident we will achieve Heat Resilience credit in the Green Star Buildings Rating.
``In fact, Winter Sports World will open green.’’
Designed to rise to the global climate change challenge, the all-electric building will operate net-zero energy in a world first for a building of its kind.
Massive solar farm
Ground-breaking insulation and heat transfer technology will mean we will only use about the same power as a similarly sized office building.
Our unique alpine exterior design was developed in collaboration with sustainable design consultant Atelier Ten by boutique Sydney architecture firm Collins & Turner, which won the design competition and achieved design excellence endorsed by the Government Architect of NSW.
Solar panels on the facade and roof will form one of Australia's largest building-mounted photovoltaic installations.
That massive solar farm will probably even generate surplus electricity. If any extra energy is needed, it will be purchased from sustainable operators.
What else are we doing green?
- A lush rooftop garden, lawns and sprawling green spaces outside to help mitigate urban heat
- Rainwater harvested in an underground tank to maintain the snow and ice, and greywater reused for things like flushing toilets and watering gardens
- All vehicles and mechanical plant equipment stowed underground, plenty of electric car charging points and buses and coaches shielded from street view under a porte cochere to mute noise
- A dozen trees removed – and replaced by 124 others, shrubs and grasses including native species
We’re exploring other cutting-edge technologies too, but here are some further design elements we will use:
- ``Blizzard’’ effect of the facade created by a screen that will also shade the windows to help cool the interior
- Heat recovery systems from snowmaking to reduce energy consumption and redistribute heat to other areas such as hotel rooms, the pool and spas
- Use of daylight in public spaces to reduce electricity consumption
- Use of reclaimed excavated material
- Use of timber to reduce body carbon
